I keep having to remind myself that I have a 5k coming up in 2 weeks. I know, not exactly a marathon but I’m not much of a runner so it feels like enough of a challenge to me. I don’t know why I’ve never been too into running.
Probably partly because when my asthma’s not good, running is torture. I only occasionally have asthma struggles these days, though. Fact is, it will probably never be a huge fitness love of mine, but it is fun to do races, I’ve realized. I love the enthusiasm, team spirit, and everyone working hard together for a good cause. That totally motivates me so much more than running by myself.
I also don’t mind the free stuff you get at races. The race I have coming up — the San Diego Mermaid Run — I’ve done for the last two years in a row. It’s hosted by Prevention magazine. Since I used to work there (on the east coast), I love being able to support them at a west coast event.
AND they really provide for their participants. They always come up with a cute, stylish-looking race shirt. I wear the shirts from the last two years’ races all the time to work out. Some of the race shirts I’ve gotten at other events have been kind of a waste of fabric, really, and have been promptly placed in the Goodwill bag.
I kind of spaced and almost didn’t sign up for the Mermaid Run this year because I haven’t been running too much lately. But then I looked online and saw that Allison Sweeney, host of The Biggest Loser, was going to be there and that kind of made me reconsider. I do like that show. Then I saw a photo of this year’s shirt and realized I wanted it.
Celebrities and material rewards aside, I also know from experience that even though I don’t love running, it still feels really good to push myself. We’re all stronger than we think and just because something doesn’t feel instantly comfortable and fun, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try to do it anyway. You’ll never know how good completing a physical challenge can feel unless you give it a shot.
Since I’ve decided to go for it in 2012, I’m wondering if I should try to step it up and try doing a 10k some time this year. Trying new things and taking on new challenges really helps you stay interested and invested in your fitness. Go ahead, try something that’s “so not you” this year. You might find you’re not who you thought you were.

So jealous that you get to do a 5K where Ally Sweeney will be! And that you live in a place where you can do races year-round! It’s freezing back in PA! Want a roommate? I need a warmer climate!
Keep at it girl!
Come visit any time!
You keep at it, too! You’re doing great. You’ve already done a half marathon. I’m so impressed!
Do a 10K for me! I regret not getting my butt in gear to do a race when I had the chance – now it’s walking only.
I wish I could run…but back issues prevent me from it
This sounds like a fun race! Dan (my husband) ran an 18 mile race last year and is training for a half marathon this year. I see you are going to be teaching spin! That is so awesome, I just started spinning and LOVE it!
It’s really fun, huh? Such a good workout, too! I can’t believe how high my heart rate gets during spinning. Glad you’re enjoying it, too! Sorry you have back issues to contend with now. I think I remember you running some races previously so that’s great that you got some in while you were able to!
