I’m sick. I hate it.

I woke up this morning with chest congestion, a cough, body ache, fatigue — feeling seriously boo. I managed to work a short day though, and on my way home picked up a bunch of fresh fruit. I often have success kicking sickness when I go after it hardcore as soon as it starts. In additon to taking some good old Mucinex (yuck, but it works), I’m also turning to antioxidants, mostly from tea, fruit, and vegetables, to help rally my immune system for a top performance.

When I got home, I broke out my juicer and juiced several whole oranges, a grapefruit, and a handful of pineapple spears. I poured some of that juice into the blender with ice, fresh strawberries, blueberries, banana, and just a splash of coconut milk and pushed play. It was SO good and one of the healthiest smoothies you could ask for. Most smoothies that you order out and about don’t have much real fruit in them, if any, unfortunately. I have a small container of orange, pineapple, and grapefruit juice left over that I can drink over the next day or so.

It makes sense to me when I’m sick to cut out junkfood-type food that’s more likely to trigger inflammation in your body or foods that stimulate mucus production (like milk, dairy, etc). Sorry, I know “mucus production” is a gross thought.  In addition to laying off these foods, I try to pump myself up with lots of nutrient-dense, health-promoting foods that are easy on the body and help fortify it. (I try, anyway.) 🙂

Hey, it’s Tuesday. Why not treat yourself to some cool and fruity refreshment whether you’re sick or not? Your body will love it!
